Donald Clare - Chinese Linguist

Post  donstu880 on Thu Dec 31, 2015 12:16 pm

I've just received an email from a (Dr) Rebecca Clare who is trying to find some info about her late father Donald Clare who was a Chinese Linguist in the 60's. The following is the text of her email - if anyone can help, please let me know and I will pass on her email address:

'I wonder if you can help? I am about to move to China to set up a school
and, whilst packing up our belongings, I found an old letter written by my
father, Donald Clare, who was stationed in Hong Kong in the early 1960s.
The letter was written to his aunt back in Leigh near Manchester, I think.
He had been at Manchester University and did an MA in History - I know he
had further academic ambitions but I think these did not come to fruition
(though he later became a headmaster and schools' inspector).
In his letter, he mentions Little Sai Wan, the RAF and learning Chinese -
I remember from when I was a small child that he spoke rather good
Chinese. Sadly, he died in 1992. I have been trying to find out more about
his life before I was born and I am fascinated by this period in his life,
about which I know nothing. His letter, and one or two photos, indicate
that this was a time of great happiness in his life. I googled 'little Sai
Wan RAF' and came to your site. I wonder if any of your members remember
him or could shed any light on what he might have been doing in HK? His
letter is dated 1960 or 1962 - I can't make it out. I would so like to
know more about him and his time out east, especially as I am now about to
emigrate in a similar direction! Many thanks for any help you can give me,
very best wishes,
(Dr) Rebecca Clare'
